Prebiotic Fiber for Appetite Control: The Actual Mechanism

Two separate pathways get grouped under "fibre helps with appetite": physical bulk creating fullness, and fermentation byproducts influencing gut hormones that signal satiety.

Physical fullness

Some fibres (like glucomannan) absorb water and physically expand in the stomach, creating a sensation of fullness. This requires the fibre to be taken with adequate water and generally works at gram-scale doses.

Hormonal signalling

Fermentable fibres like inulin don't create bulk in the same way — instead, their fermentation byproducts (short-chain fatty acids) are thought to influence gut hormones like GLP-1 and PYY, which signal satiety to the brain. This pathway is more indirect and slower-building.

The honest distinction: "appetite control" fibre claims usually rely on one of these two mechanisms — check which one, and at what dose, before assuming a marketing claim applies to a specific product.
